This project was inspired by Web-based art that depends on
two, three, or more, technological add-ons that many computer users don't have.
If more is better, PLUG / INVENTORY must be the best, because it demands
that users have ALL plugins to experience it correctly.
If you're like me, you probably don't have more than one or two plugins
configured correctly. Each time I upgrade my browser or operating system, there are
more things to fix. Sadly we'll never fully experience this. But hopefully there
is someone out there someplace who can make it all work right.
PLUG / INVENTORY presents the array of media formats that constitute the "content"
of the World Wide Web. While providing a new perspective on the variety of documents
on the Internet, it also draws attention to what Peter Weibel dubbed the "net condition."
PLUG / INVENTORY acknowledges the transience of file formats and the frustrations
of incompatibility. It portrays the disappearance or inaccessibility of the too-old and the
too-new as defining characteristics of digital collections.
As the collection coordinator, it is my sincere hope that this smorgasbord
of Web content blows your mind without crashing your browser.
